POST #16 - LECTURE - ELECTRONIC MEDIA and PERFORMANCE

With the invention of technology artists used it as a tool to further their art. Fluxes artists started using the data. They blurred the lines between art and audience. Ion artists had no money exchanged, they didn't want to get paid. They just wanted their idea to get a crossed to the people.

When it comes to a programmer and a coder, there is a difference. A Coder has a more complex job of coding. They have to change language into code, they are writing code. While Programmers are telling a system what to do. They create the instructions for the software to understand. The both work together to create amazing things.

Computer's can be used as a tool for everyday life. That includes using it to send an email. As long as it's being used to help people with tasks they need/want to do. This also includes playing video games. When it comes to using computers as a medium. It physically needs to used to create the art, by adding it to the media. Portrait of Edmond de Bellamy is an AI painting. This painting was created by AI. It was Dada, Conceptual Art and Fluxus that allowed computers to be a medium. Fluxus changes art. They allow people to touch the art. Their artwork is interactive. Dada used it for photo montage.

Marcel Duchamp questioned the concept of whether an idea can be a work of art? He also questioned wether good art is always skillful. He made is possible where it doesn't always have to be skillful. We've talked about Duchamp before. He invented the readymade. He opened the process that art can be anything and created by anyone. He paved the way that art doesn't have to be beautiful. All the artist has to do is state that it's art. While the artists, Sol LeWitt, in 1967 believed that the idea becomes a machine that makes the art.

There is a difference between mixed media and multi-media. The combines are a mixed media for example. Mixed media is a physical art, including paintings and statues. While Multi-media is the use of technology to create art, such as videos, graphics, and music.

The first picture to create an image was the Nude Pixel art. It used tons of pixels that came together to create it's image. Computer art uses the computer in any form to create art. Including animation, sound, videos, video games, web pages, and projections.

Micheal Knoll was able to get his computer art into an art exhibit and it's now considered art. 9 evenings of theatre and engineering. This gathered multiple artists including dancers, musicians, engineers, and artists. They created E.A.T. (experiments). They all worked with the same concert of digital and physical art. Rushenburg created combines which was neither art or engineering. This even also included new sounds. Futurists and John Cage created their art through this technique. This allowed experiments in art and technology.

Happenings were created by Allan Kaprow and were a form of performance art. They were more about what's going on and getting people involved. Performance art Piece's can be interactive as well but it's more about a particular group of people. There were instruction in Kaprow's Happenings. It usually went A goes to B and then you go to C. It's kind of like a big game that everyone gets to play. The passage of time and how we think about time was a theme of Kaprow's happening. Happening's didn't want to be confined into a museum. It was better if they were randomly placed out in the open. They wouldn't always be announced, sometimes they were spontaneous. It was also ephemeral art which meant that it didn't last forever. It lives and then it dies. Kaprow created 18 happenings in 6 days. He gave out timed instructions of what to do throughout the day every day. One of the happenings Kaprow did was Fluids. At this happening, he got tons of random people to help build a building out of ice bricks. This was a metaphor for life and how it builds then melts away with death.
