MEDIA ARTS: HISTORY AND THEORY

POST #23 - PANEL FINAL

To bring our journey through Art Media: History and Theory to a conclusion, I'll finish off with my groups Final Panel. My groupmates were Nolan, Robbie, Mary-Margeret and I. Our topics were Mona Lisa by Leonardo Davinci and Sophia the Robot by Hanson Robotics. We decided to put these two against each other in a Presidential race for The International Art Society. We split up the work with who would do what and play which role. I was Sophia the Robot and came up with her outfit, I wore a hat that resembled Sophia's robotic bald head, and came up with her responses to the questions Mary-Margeret and Nolan came up with. Mary-Margeret also helped me with some of the responses. I then went to google translate and recorded siri saying my answers to give the robotic sound that Sophia has in real life.

Robbie played Mona Lisa and did his research and came up with his answers. I helped create a "costume" for Mona Lisa, which ended up being the picture printed out and stabled to a poster board. Something Walter Benjamin would be appalled by.

Mary-Margeret created a QR code that when scanned opened voters to a google form to vote for the new President of the International Art Society.

Nolan came up with questions and played the part of a moderator along with Mary-Margeret.

My groupmates and I had a good time creating the concept and putting it together. It was fun and I think we did a good job. We informed the class about Sophia the Robot and Mona Lisa. We also got to go into the debate of AI art versus Traditional art.

Overall, I really enjoyed this class. Probably one of my favorite classes I've taken at UT. I enjoyed the material and it made me not only enjoy but appreciate and understand all kinds of art more. It also opened my mind to AI and the future of being creative with AI. I know I started out with this class, literally day 1, questioning AI and if it should be developed more but after taking this class I understand how it could be used as a tool to further enhance people's creativity and open new doors for artists from now and beyond.

POST #22 PERFORMANCE ART ASSIGNMENT

For my group's Performance Art piece for the Imaginary protest, Mary-Margaret, Nolan, Robbie and I did a protest on ALL milk. We had Nolan be the milk man selling milk while Robbie and I protested him. I created protest signs and protest shirts to give the idea that it was a real protest. Nolan wore a jumpsuit and a cooler with various cartons of milk inside. Mary-Margaret also brought milk and created a stop motion animation that went a long with our protest. Robbie help with what to say when it came to the protest and how the structure of the group's performance will go.

I think we did really good and were somewhat convincing on our topic. I know we convinced the milk man to be anti-milk. It was a fun project and everyone in my group helped and participated.

The props I created were two white shirts that said Got Humanity? and it was a nod to the Got Milk? campaigns. I created two protest signs both different. One had the Got Milk? text and it had the red circle with the line through it. The other sign had various pictures of different milks and said "Nature doesn't drink from us so why should we drink from them?"

POST # 20 - LECTURE - ELECTRONIC MEDIA and PERFORMANCE

I'm going to be honest, when it came to the Experimental film part of Art Media: History and Theory, I had a much better understanding of Experimental film being art and why someone would create films in this technique more than my Experimental production class. It's possible that my Experimental production class focused more on the technique and the how more than the why. But I couldn't get past the why to do the how.

Experimental Film defies the conventions of traditional and documentary cinema. They don't have to tell a story, or include characters. There doesn't have to be a message and can just be visceral or boring. It can range from highly personal to being very political. Just like performance art, it can be anything. The elements of a film are photography, music, painting, and dance. In Experimental film, these elements can be mixed and manipulated in any way possible to create the feeling or message the artists wants to.

Experimental Film will include full creative freedom, personal expression, spontaneity, social expression and creative betterment, and defines a unique cinematic voice. A lot of experimental films allowed artists to create a realm of their own.

Stepping away from Experimental films for a moment, stepping into decollage. A Decollage is a poster with layers of ripped posters. It's an art that is opposite of the collage. Decollage is created through cutting and tearing away instead of building together.
