Article on Creativity -
In the article, New study reveals why some people are more creative than others by Roger Beaty. Beaty goes into how psychology and neuroscience researchers have found evidence that shows an individual being creative is more complex than we perceive it as. Creativity actually uses various thinking processes and brain regions. This helps solve the question of how people are more creative than others.
The study that the article talks about involves 163 participants who are told to use a sock. The participants were given scores based on the originality of the answer, the more common the usage the lower the score while the more obscure were given higher scores. The participants that scored higher, did more creative hobbies in their daily life. Beyond the creative thinking tests, participants functional connectivity between all brain regions were measured as well. The researchers were able to create a "high-creative" network, "a set of connections highly relevant to generating original ideas".
By using this "high-creative network", the researchers were able to estimate how creative a person's ideas would be. It was all based on the strength of the individuals connections in the creative network. This came with the result that people that were more creative were also having strong connections in their network.
The article goes into specifics of what the network is and that it belongs to three brain systems, the default, salience and executive networks. Creative people are able to use their brain differently that allows it to abnormally connect to various brain systems. Beaty even states that "The results are consistent with recent fMRI studies of professional artists" and all these professional artists are talented in different creative areas.
My thoughts when it comes to this article is that it's cool to see future research go into understanding creativity. I feel like all this research is going to give the simple answer that "creativity can be taught". I think this research will open more doors for artists and researchers though. I also think it could have a huge impact on how we teach. In the American education system, it starts out with teaching young kids (pre-schoolers to 1st graders) to think creatively and allows them the space to think creatively, where there is no wrong answer just yet. I think once the kids start getting older they are taught the "correct" ways to do things versus getting the right answer by doing it the "wrong" way (even though that "wrong" way could just be a different way than what is instructed to do). I think by pressing the importance on creativity and that creativity allows an individual to be more intelligent, than soon humans will be given the freedom to learn without boarders.
